Various studies claim that there is, in fact, only one way to provide the best possible guidance to students: coaching. This means that a lecturer should never give direct advice or point out specific mistakes.

Coaching means only asking questions and allowing the student to first reflect and then come up with their own answer.

But is this truly the only way? What do you think?

I do not agree. If you want to stimulate intrinsic motivation, than indeed you should use coaching – but only when needed. Based on the Hersey and Blanchard theory, one should use a guiding method which aligns with the specific need of the student. Therefore, giving direct advice could be the best thing to do in certain situations.

Interesting dilemma… If we talk about guidance, being too directive might be counterproductive and not beneficial, but teaching requires direct advice. I think both are suitable, but not in the same situation.

I don´t think so. On the one hand, coaching develops self-awereness, focus on goals/actions and builds motivations and confidence, but on the other hand, it’s not enough. It is important to approach other methods like conseling, instruction, mentoring and academic advising and instruction for a complete student growth.
